I told the designer that I assumed planes started at opposite ends of the playing field, and he replied:

Yes, opposite ends. One of the players can determine the general area on the side of the table for each formation.

I also asked about determining starting altitudes.

Unless there's a scenario in mind that dictates the altitudes, we generally decide where one formation will be and roll dice for the other. Roll two ten siders of different colors. Declare one plus and the other negative. Subtract the lower form the higher and that's how many levels above or below the formation will be.

I asked if "--" on the datacard for a climb or dive meant zero or prohibited.

"--" signifies prohibited.
